Charlotte didn't mean to upset people all the time. It was hard enough to remember all the things you need to remember in one life, she thought, but almost impossible when you were having to deal with two lives. And so she completely forgot to learn the poem for English and she really didn't mean to try to pass another one off as her homework, she wasn't really a cheat at all, it was just she was so tired and things were feeling so difficult and just so terribly tangled.

And she really didn't mean to forget about Susannah either. It was terrible to find her crying: to see how abandoned and alone Charlotte had made her feel. When Charlotte saw the accusing faces of the other girls she felt that familiar sick lurch in her stomach. Sometimes she just wished that she was Charlotte Notatall.
